[synopsis] => This book captures the essence of two separate and different sailing "careers." The author and his collaborator friend began their careers in sailing, together, at an early age. Neither teenager knew then what would transpire after they rented and sailed together open cockpit day sailors in Biscayne Bay waters between Miami Beach and Miami, Florida. During the seventy years that followed, they rarely had opportunities to sail together. But both individually pursued sailboat cruising and racing in different bodies of water. Neither had much knowledge of what sailing the other was doing. Rosen became an academic and lived near a beautiful lake in New York State. The other, Greenberg, became a prominent cardiac surgeon who settled in Miami. Rosen's focus as an industrial-organizational psychologist was on group dynamics and leadership. He taught courses and workshops on these subjects many times, and conducted related empirical research. Greenberg, as a cardiac surgeon, assembled, trained, and led many teams to perform heart operations in hospitals. He lived very close to Biscayne Bay with easy access to the Atlantic Ocean and Florida Keys. Clearly these men both had two major career components in common - extensive application of their team development knowledge, and decades of experience with, and love of sailing. Here they are after seventy years, getting together in The Upside-Down Spinnaker. Both have developed many teams, and each has purchased, cruised, and raced several cruiser size sailing yachts. The eleven-chapter book begins with an account of how they got into sailing, and mistakes they made in the process. It then describes in three chapters some cruising experiences. These range from "joyful" to "truly ugly." These chapters are followed by one on how to choose the "right" boat. This chapter poses several thought questions for aspiring purchasers to explore before making important decisions. Relatedly, they have included a chapter that describes various experiences they, and others, have had with design shortcomings, manufacturing mistakes, and dealer errors. Knowledge of such issues can be very helpful to prospective buyers. Chapter Seven offers observations and suggestions about choosing and preparing guests one might consider as possible shipmates for a long cruise. This chapter leads into racing. Both men believe, that the human element of racing is crucial. Accordingly, the book presents a race team development model. This is followed by two chapters describing and analyzing more than thirty race crew mistakes. Both men believe that crews, including the Skipper, making the fewest mistakes will win more prizes than others. The race crew mistakes are grouped into different categories. Some are observed in the cockpit, for example, and others on the foredeck. Some are classified as "judgmental" while others are overt physical actions. They also are grouped according to when they may occur - before the start, during start maneuvers, and during the balance of the race. The book includes numerous photos and several amusing cartoons. While the book is non-technical, a Glossary is included for inexperienced readers.
