Description
A sheltered English girl, Jennifer Silver, has come to the remote Convent of Our Lady of the Storms, in the wild upper reaches of the French Pyrenees, to persuade her recently widowed cousin, Gillian Lamartine, not to become a nun. The Convent, nestling in a tiny valley against somber, brooding mountains, is dedicated to orphans. The sisters, on the whole, are of simple peasant stock--yet the chapel contains some of the finest art treasures of Europe. Jennifer is immediately rebuffed by the coolly elegant Bursar, an imperious Spaniard who tells her, brutally, that Gillian had died weeks before in an auto accident. Yet subsequent talks with the nuns and with the gentle, blind old lady who is Mother Superior lead Jennifer to believe--to hope--that Gillian may be alive somewhere and well. In the strange, stormy, and frightening days that follow, it is well that Jennifer has Stephen Masefield to turn to--Stephen, who is patient but determined, and who, luckily, would do anything for Jennifer ... It's a novel with nerve-end suspense and a superb evocation of the countryside of France.--From dust jacket.
